Running Virtual Server on Vista

February 27, 2007

You might remember that a while back I tried to install Virtual Server on Vista Beta 2 (build 5384) using Virtual Server Enterprise Edition R2 Beta 2. It kinda sorta worked, but not really.

This time I’ve got RTM Vista running (build 6000) and I’m going to install Virtual Server Standard R2, using the lessons I learned last time. What could go wrong?

To recap:

First install IIS on your Vista machine with all the right VS stuff added – which it isn’t by default. You can look at the pretty picture that follows or just check out this list to see what the magic bullets are:

Manually install IIS by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off > Internet Information Server

  • Under Web Management Tools > IIS6 Management Compatibility select IIS Metabase and IIS6 configuration compatibility
  • Under World Wide Web Services > Application Development Features, select CGI
  • Under World Wide Web Services > Security, select Windows Authentication
  • Click OK
  • Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and verify the IIS Admin service and the World Wide Publishing service are running

Install Virtual Server Standard Edition R2

  • Run IE7 as Administrator the first time you access the Administration Website, by right clicking on an IE icon and choosing Run as Administrator
  • Add your local machine to the IE Trusted Zone by clicking on Tools > Internet Options > Security and clicking on Trusted Sites then pushing the Sites button and adding http://localhost
  • Browse to the admin site (http://localhost:80/virtualserver/vswebapp.exe)
  • And that’s it

Here’s the IIS install capture I promised earlier.
